Okay. Enough celebrating. Let's get started...

Clock strikes twelve Posted by Picasa

    It's 2006, wingnuttery abounds and time's a'wastin'....

First up, K-Lo rings in the New Year:

Unfortunately Mitt Romney was unavailable for smoochies (he must have been with one of his wives) and so K-Lo was forced to finish off her Zima alone, save for Miss Snuggle Princess Baby Cutest Kitten-Witten In Da Whole World Woogums.

Next up we have have the Beverly LaHaye Institutes selections of Evangelical Women of the Year 2005 also known as the Stick-Up-The Butt Awards. As usual, this years winners have been so busy doing the Lords Work that none of them have quite mastered the art of make-up with the exception of Leslee Unruh who turned it into a martial art, guaranteed to keep her abstinent and her Mary Kay rep in pink Cadillacs until the rapture.

The there is Crazy-Ass Racist Bitch (not to be confused with garden variety Crazy-Ass Bitch) who informs us:

Meanwhile, here's the latest attempt by Risen and NYTimes colleague Eric Lichtblau to portray President Bush as King George, scheduled for Sunday Jan. 1 publication. The online headline and lead paragraph read:

Justice Deputy Resisted Parts of Spy Program

WASHINGTON, Dec. 31 - The top deputy to then-Attorney General John Ashcroft refused two years ago to approve important parts of the secret program that allows domestic eavesdropping without warrants, prompting two leading White House aides to try to win the needed approval from Mr. Ashcroft himself while he was hospitalized after a gall bladder operation, according to officials knowledgeable about the episode.

With Mr. Ashcroft recuperating from gall bladder surgery in March 2004, his deputy, James B. Comey, who was then acting as attorney general, was unwilling to give his certification to crucial aspects of the classified program, as required under the procedures set up by the White House, said the officials, who asked for anonymity because the program is classified and they are not authorized to discuss it publicly...

Nice try at nefarious spin. Two words: Big deal. So, an underling filling in for his boss doesn't want to sign off on a major, national security decision. Where's the controversy?

So the acting Attorney General is just a "underling" , something hat we will have to keep in mind next time Dick Cheney fills in for the Prez when he goes into a pretzel coma. And really now, it's not like Comey knows shit about the law or terrorism:

On October 3, 2003, President George W. Bush nominated Jim Comey to serve as Deputy Attorney General, he was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on December 9, 2003, and the President signed his commission on December 11, 2003. Prior to becoming Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Comey served as United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from January 2002 to the time of his confirmation. From 1996 through 2001, Mr. Comey served as Managing Assistant U.S. Attorney in charge of the Richmond Division of the United States Attorney's office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Mr. Comey was educated at the College of William & Mary (B.S. with Honors 1982, Chemistry and Religion majors) and the University of Chicago Law School (J.D. 1985). After law school, he served as a law clerk for then-United States District Judge John M. Walker, Jr. in Manhattan, and worked for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in their New York Office. He next joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, where he worked from 1987 to 1993, eventually serving as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division.

As United States Attorney, Mr. Comey oversaw numerous terrorism cases and supervised prosecutions of executives of WorldCom, Adelphia, and Imclone on fraud and securities-related charges. Mr. Comey also created a specialized unit devoted to prosecuting international drug cartels.

As an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, he handled the Khobar Towers terrorist bombing case, arising out of the June 1996 attack on a U.S. military facility in Saudi Arabia in which 19 Airmen were killed. He has personally investigated and prosecuted a wide variety of cases, including firearms, narcotics, major frauds, violent crime, public corruption, terrorism, and organized crime. In the Southern District of New York, he served as lead prosecutor in United States v. John Gambino et al., a six-month mafia racketeering and murder trial in 1993.

While in Richmond, Mr. Comey also served as an Adjunct Professor of law at the University of Richmond. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney's office in Richmond in 1996, he was a partner at McGuireWoods, LLP specializing in criminal defense and commercial litigation.

As opposed to Let The Legal Eagle Soar John Ashcroft:

Ashcroft was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 9, 1942. He was raised in Springfield, Missouri, where he attended public schools until enrolling at Yale University, where he graduated with honors in 1964. He received his J.D. from the University of Chicago in 1967. He began his career of public service in 1973 as Missouri Auditor and was later elected to two terms as the state's Attorney General. His ability to work with leaders of both political parties prompted his colleagues in the non-partisan National Association of Attorneys General to choose him as Chairman.

    [...]

Prior to entering public service, Ashcroft taught business law at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield.

And so we must ask ourselves: Michelle Malkin- Willfully stupid or unhinged?

Here's a clue. Posted by Picasa

    ...and since we're talking stoopid:

This is an important step by the DoJ (and by extension, the White House), especially insofar as it will reaffirm the administration’s position that we are, in fact, involved in a global war on Islamic fanaticism, and not, as many on the left and in the media seem bent on framing things, simply involved in procedural game of balancing our own civil liberties with legal efforts to find and convict terror suspects—with the liberal-left, the Libertarian right, and legacy media assuming the part of brave dissidents beating back executive branch usurpation of powers.

Such a framing of the narrative is objectively false; but there can be no doubt that it does wield quite a bit of rhetorical power, particularly inasmuch as it intentionally and pointedly references Vietnam, Watergate, the Pentagon Papers, and COINTELPro as a way to establish its anti-authoritarian bona fides and assume a kind of cultural moral highground.

What we are witnessing here is a battle that was a long-time in coming between a Republican leadership and the press. Leaks by unelected and entrenched foreign policy and intelligence bureaucrats (or perhaps elected members of the Congress?) meant to undermine the President in a time of war must carry with them consequences. Attempts by an adversarial press to supercede their mandate and actively work against a sitting administration while claiming neutrality and pretending to objectivity should have consequences.
    (my emphasis)

    "supercede their mandate"?

    This mandate:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.?

Goddamn press. Don't they know that their freedom ends where George Bush's unchecked power begins?

Jeebus, it's going to be one wingnutty year...
