Little bits of pleasure
Via Feministe a list of the 100 Best First Lines from Novels.
I am inordinately proud of the fact that my favorite book is listed (#73) as is what I consider to be the greatest novel ever written (#4), as well as a few other favorites (#3, #14, and #80).
I think this one was the birth of snark:

...and as much as I love Sinclair Lewis, #90 is a disaster.
