The Equal Rights Amendment is so last millenium
In 1920, the 19th Amendment was passed giving women the right to vote.
In 1973 Roe v. Wade was decided giving women the right to control their own bodies.
Between 1972 and 1982 the country held a decade-long debate over passing the Equal Rights Amendment which failed to be ratified before it's 1982 deadline.
From a recently released John Roberts memo from 1984:
Roberts said the women's letter "contends that more is required because women still earn only $0.60 for every $1 earned by men, ignoring the factors that explain that apparent disparity, such as seniority, the fact that many women frequently leave the work force for extended periods of time. ... I honestly find it troubling that three Republican representatives are so quick to embrace such a radical redistributive concept. Their slogan may as well be, 'From each according to his ability, to each according to her gender.' "
In defense of John Roberts, Justin Gardner of Donklephant writes:
I don’t agree with Roberts about this at all. However, another thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the fact that this memo was written 21 years ago. People’s attitudes change, and I’m hoping that’s the case here. The wage bias in the corporate world is demonstratable and we need to start being honest about it.
After having lived through the turmoil and debate (from 1972 to 1983) that preceded the 1984 memo, and considering this editorial comment from Roberts:
"I honestly find it troubling that three Republican representatives are so quick to embrace such a radical redistributive concept. Their slogan may as well be, 'From each according to his ability, to each according to her gender."
What could possibly have happened in the last 21 years that would have made Roberts change his mind? It's not as if Roberts made his 1984 comments in a current events vacuum following one of this nations greatest debates. And he was, after all, an Assistant White House counsel when he wrote the memo, not the editorial page editor of the La Lumiere Searchlight.
Perhaps Justin needs to read up a little bit on the era (which I'm guessing he may have experienced from a stroller) because most everything that needed to be said about gender and equality had already been said by 1984.
