Who knew Tom Ridge's middle initial was 'N'?

I was surprised by TNR's embrace of this tired conspiratorial tale. Are we supposed to believe Osama bin Laden, Mullah Omar and the rest are just hanging out in Pakistan waiting to get plucked at the appropriate time? And that the Pakistanis could have apprehended them at any time if only we had applied greater pressure? I got it. Maybe they're hold up on the back lot where NASA staged the moon landing. Yeah, that's the ticket. Gregory Djerejian further deconstructs the story. As he notes, the story is rife with anonymous sources and speculation, and devoid of serious context. If we're supposed to take this story seriously, TNR is going to have to do better than that.(my emphasis)
Speaking of lack of specificity and anonymous sourcing:
A plot to carry out a large-scale terror attack against the United States in the near future is being directed by Osama bin Laden and other top al Qaeda members, senior intelligence officials said Thursday.
Bin Laden and his top lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri, are overseeing the attack plans from their remote hideouts somewhere along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, according to senior intelligence officials.
"This type of plotting, this type of operational activity, is being done with the direct direction and authorization of that senior leadership," said one official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Don't you get the feeling that Tom Ridge and the folks at Homeland Security are those "Oh shit! Here comes the boss. Look busy" kind of folks? They can't even be bothered to change the friggin' color. And what specifically do they do when they change the color? Does Ridge hit a button and lights start flashing and a siren goes off like when the starship Enterprise is being attacked? I bet Ridge has a cool captains chair that spins so he can look at a whole bunch of big plasma screens that are usually being used for Halo 2 on slow terrorism days.

Another senior intelligence official said authorities are concerned about polling places being targeted during the elections, and they are trying to come up with a protection plan.
Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida is concerned too. He's planning on keeping African-Americans away from the polls. For their own safety. Because he cares. He's that kind of guy.
No. Really.
