News from all over
Well, let's see.....
Unemployment is up to a nine year high two and a half years into the Bush Administration.
The nation’s unemployment rate climbed to 6.1 percent in May, the highest level in nine years, as businesses cut 17,000 jobs in a weak economy struggling toward recovery.
Via Tapped we see someone else who's out of a job, proving that the nut doesn't fall far from the tree.
In two years as inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services, Janet Rehnquist undermined the independence of the office, showed poor judgment and created "an atmosphere of anxiety and distrust," Congressional investigators say in a new report to be issued this month.
Ms. Rehnquist rejected the findings, which come from a draft report by the General Accounting Office, a nonpartisan investigative arm of Congress. The report, she said, "consists largely of opinions, speculation, hearsay and predetermined conclusions not supported by the weight of the evidence."
Moreover, she said in an interview, the productivity of the inspector general's office improved during her tenure.
Ms. Rehnquist, the daughter of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, was appointed by President Bush in August 2001 and stepped down on Sunday, after Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, and other members of Congress complained about her management of the office.
Meanwhile, half a world away....it's not a quagmire:
Unidentified assailants fired rocket-propelled grenades and small arms at a U.S. patrol near an air base west of Baghdad on Friday, military sources said
[snip...]
The firefight in the town of Khaldiya, 45 miles west of Baghdad, is the latest in a series of hit-and-run attacks by gunmen on U.S. forces in central Iraq. Several dozen soldiers have been killed or injured.
Meanwhile, U.S. military sources said that two soldiers guarding a bank in downtown Baghdad were wounded Thursday when two men with pistols opened fire at them. The sentries returned fire and killed one of the attackers, while the other managed to flee, said a statement released by the U.S. Central Command.
It said that in a separate incident in the capital, a soldier injured four civilians when he accidentally fired his machine gun as he was picking it up. The victims, who were struck in the legs, were evacuated. The statement said their injuries were not life-threatening.
...and, back home again, George Bush issues a memo that we know he didn't write because it contains words he can barely say:
Bush directed the Commerce Department to lead the yearlong initiative and produce recommendations for legislation and other policy changes to promote more efficient use of airwaves.
The radio spectrum is a ''vital and limited national resource'' needed for economic growth, scientific research and homeland security, Bush said.
''The existing legal and policy framework for spectrum management has not kept pace with the dramatic changes in technology,'' Bush said in a memo to federal agencies. ''We must unlock the economic value and entrepreneurial potential of U.S. spectrum assets while ensuring that sufficient spectrum is available to support critical government functions.''
Bush said the way government now reviews every change in airwaves use is ''a process that is often slow and inflexible and can discourage the introduction of new technology.''
...and lastly: Ben Shapiro. Still a virgin. Some things never change.
