Better not walking on water with all those holes in your feet.
It looks like we are going to have a recall election over Gov. Gray Davis here in California. It goes without saying that the Republican party in California isn't exactly a braintrust, and that they spend morst of their time shooting themselves in the foot. But who knew they were stupid enough to blow both of their feet off so that end up walking around on bloody stumps?
Potential Republican replacements range from that congressman, Rep. Darrell Issa, to Bill Simon, the financier Davis narrowly beat in November, to actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose advisers say he will decide whether to run after the July 2 release of "Terminator 3."
Davis could even be replaced by a fellow Democrat, like Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who has not ruled out a run.
Many Republicans fear the recall could backfire and leave them worse off in a state where Democrats already control every statewide office and both houses of the Legislature.
"This entire process is unprecedented," state GOP communications consultant Rob Stutzman said Sunday.
When Republican activists started talking recall four months ago, few would have predicted it would get so far. Recall campaigns have been attempted 31 times against California governors but none has made it to the ballot.
But everything changed in May, when Issa began shoveling money into the campaign. The ambitious car alarm magnate from the San Diego area, who has served in Congress since 2000, has set up a gubernatorial campaign committee. He started campaigning around the state Saturday.
Issa, who has his detractors on the right, is a real of piece of work, with accusations of waving a gun at employees ("shots were never fired,"), screwing his business partners, and there was that suspicious little fire at one of his manufacturing plants. He's Bill Simon...but worse. If Diane Feinstein runs to replace Davis (which is likely), the job is hers. Then she gets to name her replacement in the Senate making that person the incumbent when her seat comes up again.
And Republicans and voters alike are going to look at Darrell Issa as the man who strengthened the Democratic party in California as well as costing the state an additional $30 million for the special election.
Karl Rove will not be pleased.
