Your weekend reading assignment Fall is here which means cooler evenings spent in front of a roaring fire, snuggled deep into a comfy chair, reading a good book and drinking a warm mug of Ovaltine*.
Or at least that's what we tell other people when what we're actually doing is watching King of Queens reruns and My Life On the D-List (that's the one on the gay channel. No. The other gay channel.) But let's keep up the pretense that we are actually reading Suite Française in the original french instead of watching Pimp My Ride, okay? This comes about because the generous and thoughtful mrs tbogg recently asked me to pick out some books as a gift for a friend of hers who loves to read, doesn't particularly like popular fiction, but doesn't want to have to work on something along the lines of Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves. In other words, what is known "as a good read". What I chose for her (after much consultation) was Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, Robert Coover's The Origin of The Brunists (my personal favorite), Ann Patchett's Bel Canto , and Anne Tyler's Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant. There should always be an Anne Tyler book in there somewhere.
So the question here is: in comments recommend a good book that would appeal to someone that you might not know and, oddly enough, may not share your fascination with pirates, medieval puzzles, or robot sex. We're looking for smart, well written books that just about anyone with half a brain would like.
Have at it, and the first person who recommends A Confederacy of Dunces gets banned.
*This actually only applies to you, not me. I'm in San Diego. It's always warm here. We like our Ovaltine cold and frosty, just like our women. No. Wait...
