Thanks to all the Phish Phans
As expected, I received many informative emails regarding my interest in the jam-happy band, Phish. I had asked for suggestions on where to start and, basically, everything that Phish has ever recorded was suggested, which wasn't necessarily helpful. I also received a bunch of emails from people who are in the same boat as me: outsiders looking for a map. Here is what I have gleaned:
Studio albums: Most highly recommended: Hoist and A Picture of Nectar. The common description was "accessible" as well as home to many of the songs that they perform live. Which, of course, leads to...
Live recordings. Take you pick. Lots of suggestions for Junta or A Live One. But a big nod goes towards the Live Phish series which you can read about here.
After posting on Phish last week I took it upon myself to visit a local used CD store a few blocks from my house: Second Spin. I want to give them a plug because they are one of the few non-chain music stores where the employees don't think that they are too cool to actually help a customer (See High Fidelity if you've never experienced the joy of being sneered at for not devoting your life to PJ Harvey). I was able to pick up volumes #12 and #14 of Live Phish on the cheap, and I have to say that I'm impressed with what I've heard. Solid muscianship, nonsensical lyrics at times, and a general feeling that music and concerts can be loose and fun (try telling that to Tool). One of the more intriguing aspects of Phish is their live Halloween shows where they choose another band's album and perform it in its entirety. On Live Phish Vol. #14 that I picked up, they perform The Who's Quadrophenia from start to finish, and do a fine job of it. Other performances at Halloween shows include the Talking Heads Remain in Light and the Beatles White Album.
Phish isn't an easy listen. You have to willing to invest some time and kind of give yourself over to them. I've enjoyed listening to them all day at work as background music, well as in the car while stuck in traffic.I don't think that I'm going to give up my day job and follow them around the country, selling candles in the parking lot, but, based on recommendations that I just had to see them live, I did acquire two tickets to see them on July 8 (my birthday) at Coors Amphitheatre. I'll report back on that later in my best Jane Goodall voice.
As I sidenote, I also picked up a copy of Dream Theater's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence on someone's recommendation. Jesus, do they blow. Awful. They make Queensryche look as simple and pure as the Ramones. Thank God I only paid $7 for it. The only thing that softened the blow of that crapfest was the copy of Life in the So-Called Space Age by God Lives Underwater that I got for $1.99, but even that can't get the bad taste of Dream Theater out of my ears.
