This week Newsweek asks the question:
Mideast: Will Bush's Charm Make a Difference?
Bush is determined to make peace, but he insists he won’t get involved in the messy little details
Here's the messy details:
Israeli helicopters fired a barrage of missiles at the car of a Hamas leader in Gaza City on Tuesday, wounding Abdel Aziz Rantisi, the militant group’s public face, and dealing a blow to attempts to secure Hamas’ support for the U.S.-backed Mideast peace plan. The Palestinian prime minister called the attack terrorism and Hamas, which had been considering a truce with Israel, vowed revenge.

HOURS AFTER the attack on Rantisi, Israeli forces fired toward a Palestinian residential area in the Gaza Strip, killing three Palestinians and wounding 30, doctors said.
Palestinian medics and witnesses said the second attack occurred shortly after Palestinian militants fired rockets into Israel, apparently in response to the attack on Rantisi.
The Israeli attack on Rantisi was a serious blow to the latest Mideast peace efforts, in which Bush took a personal role by meeting with leaders from both sides.
“The president is concerned that the strike will undermine efforts by Palestinian authorities and others to bring an end to terrorist attacks and does not contribute to the security of Israel,” Bush’s spokesman, Ari Fleischer, told reporters.
The strike occurred when three Israeli Apache helicopter gunships appeared over Gaza City before noon Tuesday, and fired at least seven missiles toward Rantisi’s vehicle in a crowded thoroughfare. Rantisi said he jumped out of his car before it burst into flames.

President Bush says he has no immediate plans for a Mideast summit because the one convened by former President Clinton resulted in "a significant intifada" among Palestinians.
Bush's comments, made in an interview with Britain's Granada Television, were a sharp rebuke of Clinton's Middle East policy. They also echoed those of his press secretary, Ari Fleischer, who issued an apology in February after suggesting Clinton's failed Middle East diplomacy sparked the violence between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
While not mentioning Clinton by name, Bush went on to say his administration would only call a summit "when it looks like something can get done."
"We've had summits in the past, as you may remember," Bush said. "It wasn't all that long ago where a summit was called and nothing happened, and as a result we had a significant intifada in the area."
Guess there won't be any dramatic "Mission Accomplished" flight-deck landings in the Mediterranean Sea in the very near future, so Karl can put the rolled tubesock and the flightsuit back in the closet.
