Happiness in slavery
Rebecca Hagelin whose knowledge of the culture is rooted, much like her hairstyle, back in the sixties thinks there is nothing wrong with the Bush administation spending $300 million dollars to marry off some single gals as well as compelling poor couples to stay together in grim, loveless, sexless marriages (presumably expanding the Republican ranks). Says Rebecca:
The ravages of bitter poverty, drug and alcohol addiction, poor education, desolate neighborhoods and bleak lives wrought by too many Americans growing up in single-parent households seems to have escaped them. When they look at marriage, they don't see that the wives, husbands and kids involved live happier, healthier, longer lives, that kids learn more and avoid out-of-wedlock births, chemical addictions and crime in far greater numbers. They see oppression, misery and slavery.
Now this isn't necessarily true. Lets look at a typical American family living in, say, Florida. To protect their privacy, lets call them "Jeb" & "Columba" B. Married for over 29 years, the B.'s have three children that we will refer to as "The Stalker", "The Parking Lot Pants-Dropper", and "The Crack Ho". Although a decidedly upper-middle class family living in a nice neighborhood, the B's have never given any outward signs that any right-thinking individual would regard as "oppression, misery and slavery", and in fact, seem quite grounded and happy, when not restrained by court orders, mall cops, halfway-houses, or customs agents. They are a shining example of the kind of life a truly-committed and loving couple can look forward to, provided they have a stable of attorneys on 24-hour call and large amounts of ready cash for impromptu bond hearings. It's an absolute shame that the proponents of marriage have not held up parents such as these as an example of the type of people who "accept the responsibility of shaping the young lives they bring into the world together, as God intended", as the prim, non-orgasmic Mrs. Hagelin put it.
