...and he wonders why he can't get a date.
Clueless about Barbie:
I find some rather odd refers in my logs. This one is among the strangest. It appears to be the guide for online material for a course relating to feminist issues, and all the usual suspects are present in abundance.
But it also links to an article of mine in which I contended that the Barbie Doll (which is the most popular doll in Iran) is teaching western Feminist values to Iranian girls.
Think about it: Barbie wears what she wants, including as little as she wants. She lives alone. She owns her own car (a pink convertible). She goes where she wants, alone or with friends, whenever she wants; she is never accompanied by a male relative. (So far as I know, the only family member ever identified for Barbie was her sister Skipper, but I can hardly claim to be an expert on Barbiology.) She dates Ken because she likes him; her family didn't pick him. She has a career. She doesn't wear the Burqa; she doesn't cover her head or face.
By comparison to the current role of women in Iran, doesn't Barbie sound like the epitome of western Feminist ideals?
Given the way that Barbie tends to be reviled by feminists generally, I confess I would be interested in tomorrow's discussion regarding the very idea of Barbie as a positive Feminist icon within the cultural context of a fundamentalist Islamic theocracy. Will anyone grudgingly admit that Barbie ain't all bad?

Barbie is the most popular doll in Iran, much to the chagrin of religious zealots there. Barbie likes nice clothes and goes on dates with Ken (who is also popular); she certainly doesn't cover her face. She's a career girl, a model, sexy and beautiful and glad of it. She lives alone. She wears short skirts and bikinis. She's a woman and she likes being a woman. And she's the star of the show; Ken is a supporting actor. She dates Ken because she wants to, not because her parents set her up with him. Barbie is free.
Although I'm glad Mr. Den Beste has a rich fantasy life regarding Barbie's career, social status, and self-worth, I am vaguely creeped out.
